South Whitley approves police hiring contract, SRO MOU and $124,176.50 squad-car lease

The South Whitley Town Council on Sept. 10 approved multiple police-related personnel and equipment items presented by Town Marshal Mikel Vandevender.
The council approved a three-year reimbursement contract for Officer Haupert, who is to be sworn in at the Sept. 24 council meeting and attend the police academy from Jan. 6 to April 25, 2025. The motion to accept the three-year reimbursement contract passed 2-0.
Council also authorized Marshal Vandevender to sign the Whitko School Resource Officer memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the 2024–25 academic year; the motion to allow the marshal to sign the MOU passed 2-0.
On equipment, the council accepted a Crossroads Bank lease proposal for two new police vehicles on a four-year repayment plan totaling $124,176.50; the clerk recommended the four-year term to reduce interest expense. The motion passed 2-0.
Marshal Vandevender reported that Officer Fannin and his new K-9 will begin training the week of Sept. 16 (a course of about three weeks, possibly two depending on performance).
All motions related to hiring, the MOU and the vehicle lease were recorded as passing 2-0 in the Sept. 10 minutes.
