The South Whitley Town Council on Sept. 10 approved a utility recommendation to accept an API quote up to $46,360 to re-route and rehabilitate water lines on Flint Street to reduce sediment buildup that has affected nearby homes.
Utility Supervisor Kent Slater presented the quote; Councilman Brock Waterson moved to accept the API quote (up to $46,360) and Councilman Randy Cokl seconded. The motion passed 2-0.
During public comment, Karen Jordan urged the council to treat the old water tower as part of the town's historic district and to hire a grant writer to pursue funds for repainting and preservation; she said the tower was built in 1928. The council did not take action on that request at the Sept. 10 meeting.
Also during public input, resident Trina Fetchik asked the town to pay to remove a tree with a longitudinal crack on her tree lawn at 303 S. Line St.; Attorney Greg Hockemeyer said homeowners are generally responsible for tree-lawn trees, but Marshal Mikel Vandevender advised the council to have the specific tree inspected because a collapse could damage Line Street and town assets. Utility Supervisor Kent Slater was asked to inspect the tree and provide a removal quote.
Ag Plus, which purchased the old Whitley Tax building and the adjacent parking lot, told the council it plans to work with the town and the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) to re-route existing power lines so grain trucks can use the lot as a staging area; Ag Plus must verify whether the lot is zoned for industrial use and expects an IMPA quote at the next council meeting.
No final decisions were made on the water tower preservation request or the Ag Plus power-line reroute; the Flint Street water-line quote was approved for procurement up to the stated amount.
