The Grand View Heights Planning Commission on June 17 approved PC case 12-2026 at 1587 West 3rd Avenue, authorizing sign variances for the school athletic complex and ratifying a naming-rights arrangement tied to a $350,000 donation.
Commissioners heard that the district and donors reached an agreement for naming rights to the field; staff said the facility will now be referred to as "Moro Field." Jordan Selick, presenting the staff report, said the request includes variances for sign size and for a rooftop-mounted sign because the site is zoned RS2 (residential) where sign area limits are normally much smaller.
Selick told the commission that the proposed lower sign would increase from about 115 square feet to about 120 square feet and that a new upper sign would require similar relief because it is rooftop mounted. He recommended approval and suggested a condition that any future signage for the athletic stadium return to the planning commission for review to prevent incremental overages.
Commissioners asked whether the signs would be depth-mounted box letters, how the signage would be permitted (a sign permit will be required), and whether temporary athletic banners or permanent achievement signs would be treated differently. Selick and other staff said existing smaller achievement signs are within current allowances and that a sign permit and administrative review would control materials and final dimensions.
Commissioner Hawk moved to approve the variances; Commissioner Hollerin seconded. The commission took roll-call votes and approved PC case 12-2026. Selick noted the naming-rights term discussed in the meeting was 25 years for Moro Field.
