The Transylvania County Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution #23-2026 on April 27 to establish a routine process for distributing prior-year fire district tax collections tied to former fire tax districts.
Finance Director Meagan O'Neal explained state law requires fire tax revenues be used for fire protection within the district. After the county consolidated individual fire tax districts into a single countywide fire tax rate for FY2026, small prior-year balances tied to former districts have remained. The resolution authorizes the Finance Director to calculate total prior-year fire district tax collections at the close of each fiscal year and distribute amounts to the respective departments on an annual basis until material prior-year amounts are fully allocated.
Commissioner Jason Chappell moved to approve the resolution; Commissioner Larry Chapman seconded the motion, which passed unanimously among members present. The transcript lists small estimates by district (for example, Rosman approximately $1,768 collected as of 2/28/26; Lake Toxaway approximately $2,042) and indicates distributions are expected to decline in future years.
