Union City Council hires part‑time officer, cites call volume and awards safety grants

The Union City Borough Council unanimously approved hiring Kenneth Fye as a part‑time police officer at its Aug. 13 meeting.
Mayor Robert Wolf told council members that maintaining a police department is important and recommended hiring part‑time help. Borough Manager Cindy Wells said the candidate from the certified civil service list preferred part‑time work and that the borough budgeted at least $33,560 for wages and benefits; actual part‑time costs will depend on hours worked. Councilor Joyce moved to hire Fye and Councilor Osborn seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Police Chief David Pernice reported there were 269 calls between June 1 and Aug. 13, averaging about 3.63 calls per day. Pernice said incidents ranged from vehicle pursuits and protection-from-abuse orders to domestics, warrants, drug activity, homelessness and recent suicide/mental‑health responses; some calls can occupy an entire shift.
Pernice also said he and Officer Shelly attended Alert Active Shooter training July 24–25 and that the UC Community Foundation awarded funding for four tasers and for additional security cameras covering another section of North Main Street. Pernice described the training as “very beneficial.”
The council discussed costs and coverage before approving the hire. The borough recorded the motion as carried unanimously.
