The Barnegat Township School District Board of Education opened its meeting with awards and recognitions, honoring students, teachers and staff from across the district and hearing farewell remarks from Superintendent Dr. Latmus.
The board presented “upstander” plaques to students from multiple schools for persistence, leadership and community contributions. The district also announced winners of an eighth-grade substance-awareness public-service-announcement contest and recognized eight student projects with $25 gift cards donated by a local prevention partner.
District leaders highlighted the music program after the district was named a Best Community for Music Education for the seventh consecutive year. Principals and the music supervisor called up teachers from each school, praising their work in chorus, band, jazz ensembles and a recording-arts program that has produced tracks placed on music platforms. "We are very proud of our music department and the opportunities they create for students," the music supervisor said.
Superintendent Dr. Latmus inducted Sue Rogers into the district Hall of Fame, citing her long career as a learning-disabilities teacher, consultant and coach who mentored colleagues and supported students and community athletics. In his closing remarks to the board and community — and what he described as his last board meeting — Dr. Latmus reflected on district accomplishments over his tenure and offered thanks to staff and families. "Once a Bengal, always a Bengal," he said.
The meeting also included a short recognition of the district’s therapy-dog volunteers, who support counseling programs, and a round of staff-of-the-year awards across multiple categories. Principals and community members who spoke during public comment echoed the board’s praise for individual teachers and athletic and arts achievements.
The board said these recognitions were part of celebration items on the agenda and that district leaders will continue summer programming and planning until the start of the next school year.
