Enumclaw board selects Dr. Mark Wenzel as next superintendent

The Enumclaw School District Board announced at its May 18 meeting that it has selected Dr. Mark Wenzel to serve as the district's next superintendent.

Board President opened the communications portion of the meeting by saying the district had conducted a "multi-month search" that involved staff, students and community input and that the board was "really excited to have Doctor Mark Wenzel to be our next superintendent of the district." The board thanked staff members who guided the process and community participants who provided feedback.

The selection capped a search that, according to a board member who reviewed survey results, drew extensive public comment. "We had hundreds of responses to the survey," said Director Fisher, adding that many respondents provided written comments that the board read and used in its evaluation. Superintendent Jill Burns told the board that finalists spent a full day on campus and participated in a range of meetings and interviews as part of the vetting process: "We had an opportunity to spend the day with him and see him in a variety of settings as well before that decision was made," she said.

The board described the process as including community forums, student engagement and structured finalist visits. Jill Burns also recognized student representatives Elliott and Micaiah for participating in the interviews and presentation of student perspectives to the search team.

The board did not announce a start date for Dr. Wenzel at the meeting and did not record a roll-call vote in the public record; the selection was announced during the communications portion of the agenda. The board then continued with other agenda business and later entered an executive session to review applicant qualifications.

Next steps and any employment contract details were not specified during the public portion of the meeting. The board thanked search committee members and community participants for their input and closed the item.
