Two nominations for Board of Finance alternate fail as selectmen split 3–2
Summary
Two separate motions to appoint alternates to the Board of Finance failed 3–2 on April 21: a motion to appoint Leonard Adams failed and a subsequent motion to appoint John Batista also failed after divided votes during the Boards/Commissions agenda item.
During the Boards/Commissions portion of the April 21 meeting the Marlborough Board of Selectmen considered two applications for the Board of Finance alternate seat and rejected both nominations in separate 3–2 votes.
John Rizza moved to appoint Leonard Adams as BOF alternate; Mr. Bratz seconded. The motion failed with Ms. Concodello and Mr. Asklar voting yes and Ms. McFarland, Mr. Rizza and Mr. Bratz voting no. Immediately after, Mr. Bratz moved to appoint John Batista; Ms. Concodello seconded, and that motion likewise did not carry with a three-to-two vote.
Both applicants spoke and provided background during the meeting. Several members of the public also commented on BOF alternate candidates during the public comment period prior to the votes. No unanimous decision was reached and the board left the alternate seat unfilled by the end of the meeting.
Next steps: The board may take up the appointment again at a future meeting or solicit additional applicants.
