Art coordinator outlines three-year plan as board hears summer learning update

The district’s art coordinator told the board the art department has set three priorities for the next three years: amplify students’ access to art, create shared skill experiences across kindergarten through 12th grade, and build meaningful vertical alignment so skills taught in early grades connect to secondary work.
The coordinator, who identified herself as the district art coordinator, described an art-continuum task force made up of elementary, middle and high school art teachers that prioritized grade-band standards and identified “key focus standards” so classrooms across the district aim at the same outcomes while preserving teacher flexibility. The task force has also sent teachers to coursework at CVA and started a book study about teaching meaning in art making to support professional learning. “Before a child can make art, they have to believe that their perspective matters,” the coordinator said, explaining why the department emphasizes student voice and teacher practice.
Board members noted community connections and displays of student work as evidence of progress; the coordinator said the department plans to partner next year with Leyaki Museum to create additional educator maker opportunities and to inspire students.
Separately, the board received a brief summer learning update from Rob Phelps, summer learning coordinator and principal, and Vicki Christensen, out-of-school learning coordinator. Phelps described the district’s morning elementary transition programs focused on condensed math and ELA instruction with encore rotations; he said middle school transition includes two days at the school forest and two days at the students’ next-year middle school, with targeted ELA and math intervention for students who need it. Christensen outlined the afternoon components and family engagement activities planned for Title I families and summer nights.
The presentations were informational; no formal action was taken on the program designs at this meeting. The board moved on to the consent agenda after public comment was declined.
