El Rio/Del Norte MAC elects 2026 leadership, approves minutes; public-safety update and community comments reported

The El Rio/Del Norte Municipal Advisory Council met on Jan. 15, 2026. The council voted to elect Mike Barber as chair and Brenda Heredia as vice chair for the 2026 term.
The election process followed nominations from the floor; Brenda Heredia moved and Bonnie Bernal seconded the motion to elect Mike Barber as chair, which carried unanimously. For vice chair, Aaron Wedemeyer moved and Mike Barber seconded the motion to elect Brenda Heredia; that motion also passed unanimously. The meeting record lists a quorum and records both votes as unanimous.
Earlier in the agenda the council approved the summary meeting minutes for the prior meeting (document header referenced Nov. 20, 2025); Bonnie Bernal moved to approve the minutes and Brenda Heredia seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
Public-safety officials provided brief updates. Captain Robert Davidson of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said crime in the area has been low and urged residents to report suspicious activity. Sergeant Mike Untalan of the California Highway Patrol said the CHP has a new public information officer, Officer Givens, and that some officers are being reassigned from community services to increased patrols amid a noted increase in roadway fatalities.
During the public-comment portion Dina reported the completion of a pipeline project for her water mutual and mentioned that United Way Ventura County offers free tax services. Mary Anne said Nyeland Promise will host a vaccine and spay clinic on Feb. 7 for Nyeland Acres residents.
The council adjourned at 8:15 p.m. The minutes record the next meeting as Feb. 19, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the Roger Jones Community Center.
