Griggs County commissioners on Monday accepted the resignation of County Auditor Samantha effective July 5 and appointed Madison Eli as interim auditor effective July 6.
Samantha told the commission she plans to finish election canvassing and certification before leaving and that she will begin a new job the following Monday. "I start at the school on that Monday," Samantha said, and she described plans to be "in and out" of the auditor's office while wrapping up payroll and audit items.
The resignation prompted sustained questions from commissioners about the chosen effective date. Several commissioners said a July 5 last day would create bookkeeping and benefits complications and asked whether the county would derive value from two partial workdays in July. Commissioners cited policy and an insurance-priority interpretation that an employee whose last day falls in July could trigger employer premium payments for July and the following month (August). Samantha said she did not intend to exploit benefits and repeated that her start date at the new job is July 6.
After discussion the commission moved to accept the resignation. The motion passed on a roll-call vote and the chair announced Samantha would be considered done effective July 5. The transcript records that one commissioner voted against the acceptance during roll call.
Commissioners then moved to appoint Madison Eli, a deputy in the auditor's office, as interim auditor effective July 6. A commissioner noted Madison's familiarity with office duties, saying she "was the deputy there for four years." The motion to appoint Madison passed in a roll-call vote with one abstention.
The meeting concluded shortly afterward with a routine motion to adjourn.
Actions at the meeting included the agenda approval, formal acceptance of Samantha's resignation, the appointment of Madison Eli as interim auditor and adjournment. The commission did not adopt any policy changes to the insurance or resignation rules at this meeting; commissioners discussed asking staff or the insurer for clarification but did not direct amendments to policy.
What’s next: Samantha will leave effective July 5 and Madison Eli will serve as interim auditor beginning July 6 while the commission considers a longer-term staffing plan.
