Citing repeated clogging from consumer wipes and the risk of sewer overflows near Lake Lanier, Cumming City Council approved an emergency purchase to replace two pumps at the Sanders Road pump station.
Staff explained the pump station receives heavy flow from several feeder areas and that the existing pumps are at the end of their service life. The proposed replacement pumps include grinder mechanisms intended to break up fibrous material so it will pass onward to the wastewater treatment plant rather than tangling on pump hardware. Staff said some downstream stations have larger screening devices that remove solids, but replacing this station’s pumps now will reduce the immediate risk of clogging and potential environmental exposure.
Because the replacement was declared an emergency and the proposal was the only responsive bid, the council approved the purchase on a 5-0 vote. Staff said the city will install the pumps and monitor the station, and that further replacements will be planned and budgeted in future capital cycles as needed.
