Council approves multiple contracts, rejects fairgrounds restroom bids; authorizes emergency pump replacement

Cumming City Council voted unanimously on a package of contract awards, a loan extension and an emergency purchase during its regular meeting.
Council approved awards to multiple contractors for budgeted capital projects: a 2026 street resurfacing contract recommended to the low bidder (about $883,719) and a water-main upgrade to Strickland and Sun Pipeline, Inc. (about $691,198). The council also approved purchase of a heavy-duty crane truck for the wastewater department ($217,451) and online water laboratory analysis equipment ($75,850). In separate action, the council authorized extension of an existing GIFA loan to April 1, 2028, and adopted a resolution accepting roadway dedications for the Avanon subdivision, clarifying that the city will accept roadway from inner curb to inner curb while retaining sidewalks and street-light responsibility as private or easement items.
In an emergency action, the council approved immediate replacement of two grinder-equipped pumps for the Sanders Road pump station at a cost of roughly $166,322, citing repeated clogging from consumer wipes and the risk of sewer overflows near Lake Lanier. Staff said the new grinder-equipped pumps will reduce clogging and help protect the downstream system.
The council also rejected all bids for a new restroom facility at the fairgrounds, directing staff to re-evaluate the scope and pursue a more economical design, and approved a contract with Jerry Whites and Associates to begin a comprehensive plan update with a project budget of $42,960 and a deadline of Oct. 31, 2027; two council members were appointed to the steering committee.
All motions reported in the meeting were approved by recorded voice vote with the stated outcome “motion carries 5-0” unless otherwise noted. The council adjourned after a closed session on property acquisition.
