Mount Vernon council approves $1.12 million in payments and expands package liquor licenses to nine

At its Jan. 2, 2024 meeting the Mount Vernon City Council approved consolidated vouchers for accounts payable totaling $1,119,521.49 and adopted Ordinance #2024-01 to increase the number of package sales liquor licenses from eight to nine.
Council Member Ray Botch moved to approve the consolidated vouchers for accounts payable; Council Member Mike Young seconded, and the council voted unanimously (yeas: Botch, Gliosci, Moore, Young and Lewis) to approve the payments totaling $1,119,521.49. City Attorney David Leggans presented the second reading of Ordinance #2024-01 to increase the number of package sales liquor licenses; City Manager Mary Ellen Bechtel said there has been an inquiry but no application has been submitted yet. Council Member Donte Moore moved to approve the ordinance; Council Member Joe Gliosci seconded and the ordinance passed with a unanimous vote.
The ordinance increases the cap on package sales liquor licenses from eight to nine but does not, by itself, award a license; any prospective applicant must submit an application and meet statutory and background-check requirements before a license can be issued.
