Dan (Select Board member) presented a slide-based overview describing a pump track and beginner single-track trails, partner support from the New England Mountain Bike Association and professional assistance offered by a grant partner to estimate design and construction costs. He said the Maine Trails program can fund up to 90% of project costs and suggested the sports-complex committee explore using remaining voter-approved sports-complex funds toward the required local match.
Board members asked whether accepting grant funds would restrict future uses of the land (for example, timber harvesting or other municipal purposes). Terry Walters, who spoke to forest-management compatibility, warned that some grants can impose conservation requirements that complicate future forest management; he asked staff to confirm whether the grant would limit timber operations or other future uses.
The board asked the presenter and staff to gather specific grant terms and to report back within two weeks so the board could decide whether to authorize using sports-complex funds as part of the local match. Dan said the application deadline was mid-July and requested timely guidance.
