The Sebago School Committee on Oct. 1 adopted updated policies on the use of physical restraint and seclusion and approved first readings of two additional policies: travel expense reimbursement and temperature standards for school buildings.
Adoption of restraint and seclusion policy
The superintendent presented two companion documents — policy JKAA (use of physical restraint and seclusion) and the related procedures — updated to reflect changes in state law. The committee moved, seconded and approved the policies on second read by voice vote.
Travel expense policy first reading
The committee also approved for first reading a travel expense policy (DLC) the superintendent said was requested by the state Department of Education. The policy updates reimbursement rates to reflect current costs: breakfast from $8 to $15, lunch from $12 to $20 (including tip) and dinner from $30 to $35. The policy was approved for first reading; the district will return it for second reading at a future meeting.
Temperature-standards policy first reading
Finally, the superintendent introduced a new temperature-standards policy (EBD) required by state legislation that took effect Sept. 24, 2025. The proposed comfort range in the draft policy is 68–82°F, with specified local steps if temperatures fall to 65°F or exceed 85°F. The committee approved the policy for first reading.
What happened next
All three items advanced without recorded roll-call tallies; voice votes were used. The superintendent said the temperature policy reflects the Department of Education’s guidance and that more detailed local procedures will be developed as needed.
Why it matters
The restraint and seclusion policy directly affects student safety and compliance with state law; the temperature policy implements a new statutory requirement; the travel policy aligns district reimbursement with contemporary rates.
