Granbury council approves two memorial plaques at Jim Burks Firefighters Memorial Park

Granbury — The Granbury City Council on June 16 approved two requests to place memorial plaques in Jim Burks Firefighters Memorial Park, including a plaque honoring Julie and Bob Pennell and a Liberty Tree plaque proposed by the Elizabeth Crockett Daughters of the American Revolution.
Chris Copeland, regent of the Elizabeth Crockett chapter, addressed council during public comment to describe the Liberty Tree plaque proposal and the group's prior banner projects around the county. "My name's Chris Copeland. I'm the regent of the Elizabeth Crockett Daughters of the American Revolution," she said, and asked the council to approve installation and a potential dedication ceremony in September for Constitution Day.
On agenda item 7.1, council discussed using park-dedicated funds to purchase a bench to mount a plaque recognizing Julie and Bob Pennell rather than attaching it to the existing gazebo structure. Council members noted the gazebo and existing wooden benches showed wear and discussed replacing or restoring them; Mr. Overdeer moved to approve the Pennell plaque and Mr. Corgan seconded. The motion carried, 5–0.
For agenda item 7.2, council considered the Liberty Tree plaque request at the Shumard/Red Oak in Memorial Lane. After a brief presentation, council moved and approved the plaque placement, vote 5–0.
Council members framed both approvals as community-led efforts to honor local volunteers and contributors. The council did not attach conditions beyond normal park-dedication procedures and indicated staff would handle installation logistics.
