County surveyor proposes raising public land corner fee to $30; board to consider in annual ordinance

Sheryl Hatcher, Klamath County's surveyor, asked the Board of Commissioners on April 7 to raise the public land corner preservation fee charged on recorded documents from $10 to $30.
Hatcher said the county is responsible for about 25,000 public land corners and that the current $10 fee, set in 1985, no longer covers preservation costs. She noted the statutory cap that previously constrained the fee had been lifted, creating the opportunity to align the county's fee with inflation and neighboring counties.
The board discussed timing and expressed a preference to include any fee increase in the county's annual ordinance amendments in October, with a possible effective date of January. Hatcher also recommended removing death certificates from the list of document types subject to the corner fee; the board agreed that exclusion looked appropriate.
No formal ordinance or vote to change the fee was taken at the meeting; commissioners directed staff to include the proposal in the October ordinance process and return with draft language, fiscal impact analysis and stakeholder notice plans.
