Morgantown council OKs purchase of long rifles for police; public hearing set for spending approval

The Morgantown Town Council approved buying long rifles for the police department and set the procedural next step to authorize spending the necessary funds.
Council member David Johnson presented a quote from Centurion Arms totaling $7,776 to purchase long rifles for the police department and proposed using the town’s LIT Public Safety supplemental revenue to fund the purchase. The council agreed and Johnson moved to approve the purchase; Courtney Allen seconded and the motion passed with all members present voting yes.
Town Attorney Lee Robbins told the council that an additional appropriation would be required to spend the supplemental revenue and that he would advertise a public hearing on Aug. 12, 2024 to meet legal notice requirements. The council did not at the July 8 meeting adopt the appropriation ordinance itself; the hearing will allow the public to comment before any formal appropriation vote.
