Broken Bow honors retiring K9 Sam and introduces new K9 Maverick
Summary
The council recognized K9 Sam for 5½ years of service and introduced Maverick, a 2-year-old K9 who will join the Broken Bow Police Department after state certification in narcotics detection and tracking.
Under other business the council honored K9 Sam for 5½ years of service to Broken Bow and presented Sam and handler Captain Anderson with a commemorative plaque and gifts. Sam, a 10-year-old German Shepherd trained in narcotics detection in 2017, will retire to live with Captain Anderson.
The council introduced Maverick, a 2-year-old K9 with handler Officer Townsend. Maverick has completed handler training and will begin active duty after state certification; the minutes note that Maverick will be certified in both narcotics detection and tracking once state training and certification are complete. The police department presented Maverick with a basket of treats as part of the recognition.
Mayor Rod Sonnichsen and councilmembers thanked department staff for their service during the brief recognition. No formal vote was required for the ceremonial recognition items recorded in the minutes.
