Library director says part-time role is sufficient as town manager weighs regional oversight idea

At the Feb. 10 meeting Library Director Linda Shore described how she assumed the director role after a newly hired librarian resigned after about a month. Shore said she oversees staff, budgets and reporting and believes the director duties can be handled on a part-time basis, but she warned the board that staffing attrition and an aging workforce could change what the library looks like in five to ten years and that recruitment planning should begin now.
Town Manager Ron Robinson added that library funding currently comes from the Town, the County and the Friends of the Library. He said the County had proposed an idea to manage the three county libraries in Sonoita, Rio Rico and Tubac and suggested appointing a regional library director to oversee them; Robinson emphasized this was simply a proposal that would need review and follow-up.
Board member Sarah Klingenstein added that expanding programming could help the library remain engaged with the community. The board did not take formal action on staffing or on the county proposal; Robinson framed the regional-director idea as an option to be examined further by town staff.
