Conservation commission outlines small, actionable steps to improve town access and open-space links

The Town of Kennebunk Conservation Commission advanced initial steps under its 'Connecting Kennebunk' effort, focusing on actions the town can undertake this year.
Members said the commission will assist the Kennebunk Land Trust’s effort to connect the Mousam River Wildlife Sanctuary with the Bridal Path and will work with the Planning Board and the Climate Action Committee to identify any ordinance changes needed to support connectivity and open-space preservation. The commission identified three immediate 'low-hanging fruit' items that could be implemented quickly: add better downtown wayfinding signage (particularly pointing toward Rotary Park and Rogers Pond), install a bench at the east end of the Bridal Path, and install bike racks at Rogers Pond, the Waterhouse Center and the beaches.
Follow-up assignments included Shack updating the event summary to list these low-cost items and Tabor sending a follow-up email to event attendees inviting them to take on action items and to identify potential new commission members. The commission also noted a new Kennebunk Land Trust acquisition along Ward Brook that should be added to the commission’s map and agreed to determine what additional GIS mapping layers the town could add.
The commission tabled substantive work on the Open Space Plan at this meeting and did not adopt ordinance changes; the items recorded are planning and outreach steps to advance longer-term connectivity goals.
