Granville mayor directs police to enforce New York State e-bike rules amid rising complaints

As the summer season approaches, Mayor Paul Labas told the Granville Village Board on May 4 that the village has seen a significant increase in e-bike use and has received constituent complaints about unsafe operation, including apparent underage riding and helmet noncompliance.
Labas said he had discussed the matter with Police Chief Michael Zinn and directed the chief to increase enforcement of existing New York State regulations covering e-bike operation. Board members discussed limitations on the village's authority to regulate e-bikes on state and county roadways and agreed the village would consider consulting the New York Conference of Mayors for approaches used in other communities.
The mayor framed the action as enforcement of current state rules rather than the adoption of new local ordinances. No public comment on e-bike rules was recorded at the meeting; enforcement activity and any subsequent policy recommendations will be carried out by the police department and may be reported back to the board.
