Pima officials praise storm cleanup; town secures $1 million for high-school road

Mayor Brian Paull described widespread storm-related debris and thanked community members, the public works crew (including extra seasonal hires) and the inmate crew for their cleanup efforts. Manager Vernon Batty said he had been commended by several citizens for the town's coordinated response.
In his manager's report, Batty said he purchased a 2014, 12-passenger van for $21,000 under his delegated purchasing authority to assist in transporting inmates and seasonal public-works employees. He also announced the town has secured $1 million in grant funding for the road to the new high school and thanked Juan Ciscomani for assistance in securing the funds.
Department reports noted operational effects from the storm. Public Works Director Jimmie Lofgreen said building-permit activity had slowed. Chief of Police Diane Cauthen reported the department's calls for service are up by about 200 and that a new officer currently in the police academy will bring the force to six officers when processed. Librarian Rane Jones said the library sustained storm damage to flooring and that staff plan to remove the flooring while keeping the library open.
Manager Batty also said the Fire Department will receive a utility truck from Southwest Gas. The council adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
