Houston Mayor's Youth Council hears committee plans for service learning, mental health and education equity

Committee chairs at the Houston Mayor's Youth Council meeting on Nov. 12 summarized plans for the year and sketched service-learning projects the council may pursue.
The environmental justice committee chair said the group had discussed service-learning projects such as park cleanups, tree plantings and creating a community garden in a food-desert area, and to explore a piece of city council legislation tied to environmental justice and food access. "We went over our service learning project for the year... maybe picking up a park or planting trees... like maybe building a community garden in an area that doesn't have a lot of fresh produce," the environmental justice chair said.
Corey Bradford, voter education chair, reported on the Nov. 4 meeting that included a presentation by election judge and precinct chair Doris Fears; the committee will finalize service-learning plans at its next meeting. Mary Adebasan, education equity chair, said the education committee discussed college-readiness workshops, a possible NYC scholarship fund and book or resource drives for schools.
On mental health, Vijay Sekhara described a proposed Discovery Green youth event focused on activities and card-making to thank health-care workers and patients. The transcript shows the Chair had asked for "Misha W." to report for the mental-health committee, but Vijay self-identified and spoke in that segment.
Ms. Jackson, serving as advisor, praised committee preparation and asked each member to compile a short district profile describing needs in the council member's district; she asked for those profiles by the second week in December and reminded members to submit student ID information for badges.
The council scheduled its next meeting for Dec. 10, which will combine a meeting agenda with the approved holiday service-learning project.
