Mentone council authorizes pursuit of grants for Mentzer Park Phase 2

Amy Roe, Kosciusko County community coordinator, told the council she and Councilor Amanda Yaprak plan to meet with Dekko and the Community Foundation about potential grants "up to $30,000 each" for specific project components. Roe also noted the AWS Foundation offers a grant of up to $25,000 to fund an individual piece of equipment designed for people with developmental disabilities. Town staff have contacted an experienced contractor for quotes on a walking trail, a pickleball court and parking improvements.
The authorization was formalized by a council motion that carried. Council directed Amanda Yaprak to continue coordinating meetings and grant applications with Roe and to report back with proposal details and contractor estimates. The action does not commit town funds beyond previously appropriated planning or matching amounts; staff said specific budget impacts will be brought to the council for approval when proposals or grant awards require formal acceptance.
Next steps: Amanda Yaprak and Amy Roe will meet with prospective funders and return with recommended grant applications and cost estimates. The council also scheduled routine follow-ups at future meetings as needed.
