North Miami board opens 2025 budget hearing, approves Heartland amendments and NIPSCO project

The North Miami Community Schools Board of School Trustees on Sept. 17 opened a public hearing on the district's proposed 2025 tax rates, levy and budget and immediately closed it after receiving no public comment.
Board member Daryn Sturch opened the hearing for the 2025 budget, capital plans and bus replacement plan and outlined the proposed 2025 tax rates and levy for public review. No members of the public spoke during the hearing; on a motion by Amy Eckrote, seconded by Jeff Working, the board voted 6-0 to close the hearing.
During the same business session the board unanimously approved amendments to the Heartland Operating Agreement. Sam Finnegan moved the amendment package and Eckrote seconded; the motion carried 6-0. The board also approved a NIPSCO project at the Heartland Career Center on a motion by Finnegan, seconded by Eckrote; that motion passed 6-0.
Meeting minutes and recorded motions show the board treated these items as routine business following the strategic-plan and facilities updates provided earlier in the meeting. The district previously reported construction and roof work at Heartland Career Center as part of its facilities updates.
Next steps: the board's approval authorizes district staff to proceed with agreed changes to the Heartland operating relationship and to coordinate the NIPSCO project, subject to any additional administrative steps or outside approvals required by the agreements or funding sources.
