Beaufort County Schools review raw state assessment results; 18 schools show double-digit gains in places

Instructional Services emphasized that the data presented were raw and un‑scrubbed — the accountability dataset will be finalized later — but noted that 18 schools demonstrated 10‑point or greater increases in at least one grade level or content area. Presenters walked the board through English language arts, mathematics and science slides and gave examples of notable gains, including a more than 30‑point improvement in math at Port Royal Elementary in a tested grade level.
Presenters said changes in standards, new textbooks and increased complexity of assessments make year‑to‑year comparisons more challenging; they also noted differences in student populations, including a higher share of multilingual learners than the state average, which affects comparisons.
Board members asked for deeper analysis of schools that declined as well as those that improved, and raised questions about staffing, coaching, resource allocation and how gains might be replicated elsewhere. Instructional leaders said next steps will include deeper, school‑level data digs, instructional reviews and targeted coaching.
The presentation also covered course‑specific data for high‑school end‑of‑course exams: the district had more students take Algebra EOC this year than last, and the district trailed the state in Algebra by several percentage points even as participation increased.
Next steps: Instructional Services will provide a scrubbed accountability dataset and follow up with targeted analyses on schools with declines and on the supports behind gains.
