Board directs superintendent to produce technology climate survey; AI guidance discussed

The Beaufort County Board of Education voted unanimously to ask the superintendent to provide a technology climate survey after a recommendation from the technology committee.
Technology committee member Miss Boatwright introduced the recommendation, saying the goal was to gather standardized input from parents, staff and community partners about the district’s technology user experience, website navigation and classroom technology needs. She told the board the committee had reviewed equipment failures and user-experience pain points and suggested a survey could yield actionable, comparable data.
Board members voiced support for a survey that would include parents and the broader community and suggested the superintendent lead implementation. Mister Smith and others emphasized the survey should also capture website usability and other administrative processes, not just classroom devices.
District technology staff (Mr. Shohan) said the state is developing an AI framework and that the district is piloting AI tools for lesson planning in a measured way, describing the rollout as gradual and cautious.
The motion directing the superintendent to provide a technology climate survey passed unanimously.
Next steps: the superintendent’s office will develop the survey instrument and timeline for distribution and return results to the board.
