Barry County commissioners approve consent package, large disbursements and insurance renewal

The Barry County Board of Commissioners on June 11 approved a series of routine financial and administrative items, including a consent package that bundled minutes, maintenance spending and an insurance renewal.
Chair David Jackson called the meeting to order at 9:08 a.m., and the board voted 8–0 to approve the consent agenda after a motion by Commissioner Jon Smelker and a second from Commissioner David Hatfield. The consent package included approval of the May 28, 2024 meeting minutes; authorization of up to $220,000 for replacement of the courthouse chiller and associated piping and pumps; renewal of liability, vehicle physical damage, and property and crime insurance through the Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority for $492,442 for the July 1, 2024–July 1, 2025 policy year; and adoption of an Executive Search Schedule.
Separately, the board approved prepaid invoices totaling $7,955,488.92 (moved by Commissioner Bob Teunessen, supported by Jon Smelker), claims totaling $112,886.97 (moved by Teunessen, supported by Bruce Campbell), and commissioners' mileage reimbursements totaling $695.46 (moved by Teunessen, supported by Mark Doster). Each of those roll call votes was unanimous. The meeting record lists the eight commissioners voting in the affirmative: Mark Doster, Mike Callton, Catherine Getty, Jon Smelker, David Jackson, David Hatfield, Bruce Campbell and Bob Teunessen.
These approvals were presented as routine disbursements and maintenance authorizations; the board did not debate or amend the items on the floor. With no new business, the board concluded its meeting and adjourned at 9:48 a.m.
