Tusayan Fire District Chief Brush reported two separate aircraft incidents to the council on March 11: a Cessna lifted by a gust on the runway and an A-10 Warthog that made an emergency landing because of a mechanical issue; no injuries were reported in either case.
The incidents prompted discussion about emergency preparedness. Council members noted prior conversation about a Readiness Program and procuring an air-raid style siren. Mayor Clarinda Vail suggested raising the potential budget for a siren to as much as $300,000 and asked staff to prioritize emergency-preparedness work—especially flood mitigation and readiness projects. Town Manager Hendrix said some funds are in the budget and that the Town hopes to pursue a county-coordinated FEMA grant for siren funding.
No appropriation was approved at the meeting; Council directed staff to fold preparedness considerations into the Town Hall project where appropriate and to report back with funding and grant options.
