Tusayan council sworn in; town honors longtime public servants

Clarinda Vail was seated as mayor and, alongside Vice Mayor Greg Brush and Council Members Josh Collet, Andrew Aldaz and Kathryn Kanallakan, was sworn in at the Tusayan Town Council meeting on Dec. 10, 2024. The ceremony opened the meeting at 5:02 p.m. at Tusayan Town Hall.
The meeting’s ceremonial portion concluded with awards recognizing long-serving public employees and volunteers. Lieutenant Brian Tozer was honored for 30 years of service; the minutes record that Sheriff Driscoll presented a town Years of Service Award and offered best wishes on Tozer’s retirement. Bob Petzoldt received two Years of Service Awards in recognition of his 30 years with the Tusayan Sanitary District and his service to the community from 1994 through 2024. The council also presented a lifetime service award to Pete Shearer for decades of contributions to the town and Grand Canyon communities. Matt Yost, superintendent of the Grand Canyon Unified School District, presented an additional award to Shearer on behalf of the School and the Town Working Group.
The minutes note the presence of Bret Axlund, introduced as the incoming sheriff, and Michelle Axlund, identified as director of Coconino County Health and Human Services, during the presentations. No policy actions or funding decisions were part of the ceremonial items; the awards were acknowledgments and expressions of appreciation recorded in the official minutes.
Town Manager Hendrix used the meeting to notify council members that Financial Disclosure Statement forms were available at the dais and are due by Jan. 31, 2025. The council moved on to routine business after the ceremonial items and adjourned at 5:49 p.m.
