Tusayan closes demolition phase at 7 Mile Lodge; town seeks geotechnical analysis before next steps

Council Member Josh Collet said the demolition at 7 Mile Lodge was completed without incident. During the final grading and parking-lot work, contractors found an unexpectedly soft spot. A subcontractor excavated three to four feet and found no moisture but did encounter very clay-laden soil, prompting concern that additional investigation is necessary before paving or further construction.
Collet said the next steps are to close out the existing demolition contract with Loven, engage the Town Engineer, and commission a geotechnical and soil analysis to scope remediation. Council Members Collet and Andrew Aldaz are scheduled to meet with Michael Taylor the following day to advance those plans.
Town Manager Hendrix confirmed staff will prepare the geotechnical scope and return cost and scheduling options to Council for approval. No formal appropriation for remediation occurred at the meeting.
