Three motions to fill Hiram council vacancy fail after executive session
Summary
After meeting in executive session, the Hiram Village Council failed to appoint a replacement to the vacated council seat: motions to appoint Chris Perme and Chris Cobb each failed 2-3, and a motion to appoint Juan Fernandez failed for lack of a second.
Council considered three applicants to fill the remainder of a vacated council seat at its Oct. 8 meeting but did not appoint anyone.
After convening in executive session for personnel matters under ORC 121.22, Council reconvened and took three votes. A motion to appoint Chris Perme (moved by Chris Szell, seconded by Mr. Frato-Sweeney) failed on a 2-3 voice vote; Mr. Smith, Mrs. Greenwood and Mr. Bisutti voted no. A subsequent motion to appoint Chris Cobb (moved by Mr. Smith, seconded by Mrs. Greenwood) also failed 2-3, with Mr. Bisutti, Chris Szell and Mr. Frato-Sweeney voting no. A later motion to appoint Juan Fernandez failed for lack of a second. The council adjourned without filling the seat.
Both Chris Perme and Juan Fernandez spoke at the meeting about their interest and qualifications; Chris Cobb had applied but was not present to speak. The council will need to consider next steps to fill the vacancy at a future meeting.
