The Governing Board of the Window Rock Unified School District on March 3 heard a proposal to sell the unused Sawmill school facility to Navajo Nation Public Safety for use as a police academy. The potential sale was described as a way to reduce district maintenance costs and put the vacant property to use.
Hon. Delegate Dr. Andy Nez, Superintendent Horsley and Support Services Director Erwin White presented the concept and outlined possible benefits, including lower maintenance obligations for the district. Board members did not vote on the proposal and said they need more information before taking action.
Board members requested demographic data for the Sawmill area and formal community input as part of any decision-making process. Officials also said a legal review and formal board approval would be required before moving forward.
The matter was placed on a future work study agenda so staff can compile requested data and seek public feedback. No sale agreement or timeline was approved at the March 3 session.
