The North Knox School Corp board voted to give tentative approval for a student field trip to London in spring break 2027 and asked administration to provide the tour company’s detailed cancellation/refund schedule and insurance options before final approval.
Alan Bing, who identified himself as a world‑history teacher, presented the proposal and said the all‑inclusive package costs $3,989 per student. He said the tour operator offers a 16‑month payment plan (the presenter estimated about $244 per month per student under a full 16‑month plan) and a $95 initial deposit. The company provides an individualized fundraising page for each student so families can solicit donations. The board’s motion gave tentative approval and directed the presenter to submit the company’s detailed cancellation and refund schedule and any insurance options the district might recommend.
The board also approved the 2026–27 school calendar as presented. Administration said fall break was moved back one week to better align with athletic schedules and that spring break will run April 22–26 with Good Friday observed. The board voted to adopt the calendar by voice vote.
Administrators reported the district’s FY2025 teacher-compensation percentage is 61.57%, below the 62% requirement. They said the shortfall is largely due to fewer teachers taking district health insurance and certain offsite or dual‑credit positions not counting toward the calculation. The board approved submitting a letter to the state explaining the variance, as required.
The board accepted two $1,000 donations (from the Bill Walk family fund/Knox County Community Foundation and Knox F.A.) for classroom needs and supplies. It also approved multiple personnel items including volunteer assistant coaches, new hires for yearbook and dual-credit positions, a resignation (teacher Tiffany Waffler, effective Nov. 11), additional after‑school tutors, and a temporary fourth‑grade teacher through Dec. 19.
Facility uses for post prom (April 25–26) and the BNL Elks Hoop Shoot (Dec. 14) were approved. Administrators provided routine updates about school events, a pilot of new bus radios (initially installed on buses 2 and 19), the rollout of a new dyslexia screening tool and state family-access portal work. The meeting closed after scheduling the next board meeting for Dec. 15.
