Wolcottville council approves vacating alley on Race Street

Wolcottville — The Town Council voted June 3 to approve Ordinance 2025-06-03-4 vacating a public right-of-way on Race Street after a brief public hearing. Town Attorney Kurt Bachman said the town notified nearby residents of the petition and that the petitioner, Jerry Raber, presented a survey to help determine whether public utilities cross the alley.
Raber told the council the alley ‘‘serves no good purpose’’ for the town’s future and described the area as swampy. Resident Thomas Sprague questioned how many additional homes could be built if the alley were vacated; Raber replied only a duplex would be constructed.
Vice President Steven F. Cords moved to close the public hearing and, following council discussion, moved to approve the ordinance; Council Member Jeff Sorg seconded. The minutes record the vote as ‘‘all in favor; motion carried.’’ The council also voted to waive the ordinance’s second reading.
The ordinance and accompanying survey will be retained in town records; Kurt Bachman advised council staff to verify whether any public utilities are present before finalizing administrative steps required to record the vacation. The council did not record a roll-call tally in the minutes beyond the ‘‘all in favor’’ notation.
The council adjourned routine discussion of the matter and moved on to other agenda items.
