Committee recommends not renewing Coosaw Sands Point Community Center lease; Parks and Rec to absorb maintenance

The Community Services Committee recommended that Beaufort County not renew the lease for the Coosaw Sands Point Community Center, a property on Ladies Island. County staff briefed the committee that the site has had little or no Parks and Recreation programming for about 10 years, and that Parks and Rec could absorb maintenance responsibilities if needed.
Staff clarified the site is used as a polling location and that non-renewal of the lease would not affect voting operations; the voter-registration and Board of Elections office would handle continuing election use through a separate facility-use agreement. The committee discussion included questions about community need and potential alternatives; staff said they would meet with the community and consider revisiting programming in a year.
The chair asked for a show-of-hands vote and the committee voted unanimously to recommend that the county not renew the lease. A staff member said annual utility-cost savings associated with non-renewal are approximately $66,500 (give-or-take), primarily from utilities that Parks and Rec had been absorbing.
The committee’s recommendation will be forwarded through the council process for final action.
