Stoughton committee approves resolution urging state action on sustainable transportation funding

The Public Works Committee approved a resolution urging the governor and the state legislature to pursue a comprehensive sustainable transportation funding solution and authorized the mayor to bring the resolution to city council at an appropriate time.

Mayor Swoboda and staff said the effort aligns with a broader League of Wisconsin Municipalities campaign and that the city has already begun conversations with state legislators. Swoboda told the committee he had met with Representative Udell and said the timing could be appropriate to put the issue on legislators’ radar.

A committee member moved to give the mayor authority to present the resolution to council when staff and lobbyists advise it is strategically appropriate; the motion was seconded and passed. During the vote one member said, "I need to abstain," and the chair announced the ayes had it.

Committee members noted that professional lobbyists working with the League will provide strategic guidance about timing and outreach. If council approves, staff will forward the signed resolution to local legislators for consideration.

Next steps: the mayor will take the resolution to council at a time recommended by staff and the League’s lobbyist; staff will follow up with the city’s lobbyist and the League of Wisconsin Municipalities.
