South Whitley marshal announces resignation, hiring plans and equipment request

Town Marshal Chad Schipper told the South Whitley Town Council on Nov. 25 that Officer Tim Johnson has resigned and the department will begin accepting applications, prioritizing lateral candidates.
Schipper said a new part-time officer, recently of the Syracuse Fire Department and formerly a Conservation Officer, has joined the department on a part-time basis but requires updated trainings and certifications. The marshal asked council members to allow a search for a lateral hire to fill the vacancy.
Marshal Schipper also presented two quotes for a side-by-side utility vehicle to assist officers at high-traffic community events (garage sales, fall festival, trick-or-treating). The vehicle would be equipped with lights and sirens; Schipper said lights/sirens installation would cost about $2,000. Councilman Kris Shoemaker instructed Schipper to obtain better pricing and a full-feature quote, and the item was tabled until the next meeting.
Next steps: the marshal will advertise or solicit lateral applicants as appropriate and return with consolidated cost estimates for the requested vehicle and equipment installation.
