Police marshal reports surge in calls and difficulty procuring patrol vehicle

Marshal Ryan Hornback told the Sweetser Town Council on Dec. 14 that his department responded to 194 calls in the most recent two-week period and has handled 3,881 calls year-to-date, 523 more than during the same period last year.
Hornback also described equipment and procurement challenges: Kelly Chevrolet quoted $49,525 for a new Chevrolet Tahoe and warned the town that current dealer supply would leave less than a 10% chance the department could obtain a vehicle through that source in 2024. He said deputies requested small emergency kits, caution tape and evidence markers and that he will order those items.
The council heard the report as part of department updates; no formal action on vehicle procurement was taken at the meeting. Hornback also reviewed training status for himself and Deputy Jim Kinzie and said the department is managing with current staffing and equipment while pursuing replacement options.
Council members did not vote on funding during the meeting; the item remains an administrative and budgetary issue for future consideration.
