Sunman council adopts emergency water contingency plan, will submit it to state EMA

The Sunman Town Council adopted Resolution 2026-02 to approve an emergency contingency plan for the town’s public water system and said it will submit the document to the Department of Environmental Management for review.

Council members described the plan as an outline of protocols to follow in the event of man-made or natural disasters and said it covers 15 sections of operations and response. The council noted the plan must be reviewed periodically; speakers said it will be revised annually or sooner if staff or law changes warrant updates.

Members credited local volunteers and neighboring agencies for helping prepare the plan at no charge and said staff will coordinate submission of a parallel wastewater asset-management document. The council agreed to place printed copies for public access at the wellfield, town hall and the Marshall’s office and asked designated personnel to carry copies in town vehicles so responders can consult them during an incident.

Councilors also clarified emergency authority and spending in the plan’s procedures: in an emergency the chair or a designated official can approve immediate expenditures (for example, bottled water) and the Marshall is responsible for activating county- and state-level EMA resources, the council said.
