Thorntown council approves new town website, USB appointment and $6,000 road quote

Thorntown — The Thorntown Town Council voted unanimously at its Jan. 5 meeting to adopt a free website option offered through IOT, appoint a new member to the Utility Service Board, approve insurance renewals including coverage for a newly acquired police vehicle and authorize site work at a town well.
Clerk-Treasurer Aly Hickman told the council a no-cost website available through IOT would meet the town’s needs while allowing the municipality to keep Invoice Cloud as its utility payment processor. After discussion, Council Member Bruce Burtner moved to switch to the IOT-hosted website; Randy Bruder seconded and the motion passed 5-0.
The council also approved the appointment of Matt Rairdon as the third member of the Utility Service Board after a recommendation from USB President Erick Smith. Clerk-Treasurer Aly Hickman administered the oath of office to Rairdon at the meeting following the council’s 5-0 vote to appoint him.
On insurance matters, Hickman reported premiums were due for the town’s professional liability policy and to add the new police vehicle to coverage. Bruce Burtner moved to approve the renewals and addition of the vehicle; Bruder seconded and the motion passed 5-0.
Municipal consultant Jeff Wolfe said he had sent a draft letter of intent to Town Attorney Amy Nooning that would allow Thorntown to participate in preliminary discussions and the application process for a regional sewer district without obligating the town to join. The council authorized Council President Dave Williams to sign the letter once it was finalized; the motion passed 5-0.
Council members also approved a $6,000 quote from Newby Excavating to build a road to a town well site. Bub Newby described planned work at the site, and Dave Williams said property owner Mr. Bechtold had granted permission to remove trees on the donated parcel. The motion to accept the quote passed 5-0.
A utilities report noted Mint City would return that week to continue contracted tree trimming and removal work. With no further business, the council adjourned at 7:18 PM.
