Preservation commission touts landmark work, proposes demolition fee and permit rebates

At the June 18 committee meeting the Preservation Commission reviewed a year of activity and upcoming work on preservation incentives and a new demolition-fee structure.
Commission chair Peter back told trustees the commission met monthly in 2025, reviewed 16 demolition applications and helped move updates to the preservation code that consolidate related sections. "We have been working uh updating the preservation code to consolidate two sections ... establish a pilot permit fee program for permit fee rebates for historic structures," Peter back said.
The commission also described a newly established demolition fee of $3,000 for any home and $5,000 for an honorary landmark; trustees had already voted on related code changes at a prior meeting, the presenter said. Commissioners said they are working with the zoning commission and staff to provide additional floor-area flexibility for certified and honorary landmarks to offset constraints created by historic design and older construction.
The presenter noted a detailed analysis of deteriorating, village-owned historic concrete bluff entries that will require funding strategies because repairs are likely to be costly; the commission said it will propose communication and funding options to preserve village-owned landmarks.
Trustees thanked commissioners for their work; the committee did not take further immediate action beyond acknowledging the report.
