The Board addressed two unsafe-building matters at its Jan. 7 meeting.
Director of Fire Prevention Jody Taylor reported that the owners of 3161 E 84th Pl. are making repairs and the structure is not occupied, but the sprinkler system remains inoperable pending replacement parts. Taylor said the Fire Department will conduct a sprinkler test once parts arrive and repairs are complete. The Board voted to remove the property from the Unsafe Building Authority agenda and turn the matter over to the Building Department for follow-up (motion by Mrs. Longer, seconded by Ms. Galka; 3-0).
On the duplex at 6895-97 Colorado St., Building Commissioner Felix Perry said exterior code violations have been addressed but a final walkthrough has not occurred because of lack of access for utilities. Perry said he had contacted NIPSCO about reconnecting gas and electric but access was needed. Elyssa Meade of US Bank, the mortgage holder, participated by telephone. Perry stated that restitution for an earlier board-up totals $2,300 and must be paid before occupancy will be permitted. The Board continued the matter to its Feb. 4, 2026 meeting (motion by Mayor Huddlestun, seconded by Mrs. Longer; 3-0).
No public attendees spoke on these items during the meeting. The Board then moved to other business and adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
