Board praises volunteers after Arbor Day plantings and a high-turnout recycling/hazardous-waste event

Board members and staff used the May 14 meeting to recap recent community events: volunteer training, tree plantings and a high-turnout recycling/household-hazardous-waste event that strained traffic control.

Staff reported 350 trees were planted at Rose Run as part of Arbor Day activities and highlighted the new "Green Guardians" volunteer program: 17 people attended training and 15 submitted volunteer applications. "We had the green guardians training... 17 people attended, 15 of those people filled out the volunteer application," staff said, and the city has purchased branded, wheeled bins to help volunteers sort food-waste at events.

The board also reviewed the results of a large recycling/hazardous-waste collection day. Staff said PlaceR AI geofencing data indicate about 45.7% of participants came from ZIP code 43054 and that the operation collected "almost 21,000" (units/items) in 2025, a large increase from prior years. Members described long queues (about an hour in some lanes) and noted hazardous-waste processing as the primary bottleneck. One board member suggested using time slots or a ticketing system to spread demand next year; staff said they will consult the vendor Sweco for operational recommendations.

Members praised staff and volunteers for handling the event and discussed adding reuse options (e.g., community paint sharing, free-item postings) to reduce waste flow in future years. Staff said they will develop a post-event statement for the public and analyze PlaceR AI data to learn where participants travelled from.
