New Albany board reviews demonstration planting plans for Taylor Farm and Planters Grove

The New Albany Sustainability Advisory Board reviewed detailed plans on May 14 for demonstration native-plantings at Taylor Farm Park, Planters Grove and a James River riparian area, and gave staff direction on next steps and outreach. Cody Wright, the presenter, described flagged site hazards and two placement options for a 100-square-yard demonstration plot at Taylor Farm and proposed different species mixes for upland and wet areas.
Wright said the team "mapped everything, including all of these fun little dots, which are just hazards that we would be working around at Taylor Farm," and outlined an upland mix of shorter prairie species and a separate wet mix for riparian pockets. He presented two siting alternatives: one centered on an existing curve (shade-prone) and a second shifted north for more sun. Wright said the planting list in the handout is not final and that the landscape architect will deliver a comprehensive layout soon.
Board members focused on maintenance and visibility. One member asked whether the city’s ditch mower could safely operate adjacent to the plantings; a staff member confirmed the mower arm "can tilt," and the board agreed to set a clear maintenance line where mechanical mowing should stop. Members also recommended creating an interior oval planting to demonstrate a homeowner-scaled bed and adding photos or a rendering to the QR-code outreach so passersby can envision the mature planting.
On Planters Grove, staff recommended riparian species and plugs to establish plants in depressions that remain wet. "They're gonna be much taller," a board member said of the wet species, and staff noted those areas are less suitable for turf and may not require regular mowing once established.
The board asked staff to prepare yard signs and a QR code that link to project information and a phone number for questions, acknowledging the plantings will look untidy during establishment. Staff said they would reuse an existing sign template and provide visuals and a maintenance plan in a future packet. The board requested the comprehensive site plan and scheduled a follow-up review once staff receives the landscape architect’s layout.
The meeting ended with the board directing staff to finalize square footage for proposals and to plan site preparations this season, with planting of plugs and container plants anticipated in the fall. The chair moved the minutes and adjourned later in the evening; no public speakers commented on this agenda item.
