At the April 14 work session Green for Life (GFL) Environmental representative Mel Acosta updated Sanford City Council on garbage and recycling service disruptions and the company’s planned fixes.
Acosta said weather closures, staff turnover, vehicle maintenance issues and vendor delays for parts contributed to recent delays. To address those issues GFL is adding trucks, hiring drivers, re-routing and implementing a new dispatch and customer-notification system called ‘‘NaturSoft’’ on June 1, 2026. He said NaturSoft provides remote dispatch and real-time service verification and that GFL will continue special arrangements, such as back-door pickup for elderly customers.
Facilities/Waste Services Administrator Kris Furmage noted that some problems stem from residents not placing carts at the curb on time and said GFL has been responsive to individual service requests. Acosta invited Council members to ride routes and offered Council and staff a direct contact number to escalate problems.
Acosta said trucks typically begin moving around 5:30 a.m. to avoid school buses. Council Member Charles Taylor suggested including GFL in the Technical Review Committee process to improve coordination between development and routing.
