Cameron County commissioners adopt SAO addendum aimed at data center oversight

Cameron County commissioners said they unanimously approved an addendum to the county’s SAO intended to provide tools for reviewing data center proposals and protecting local resources.

Commissioner (addendum proponent) said the change “gives us some teeth” when asked why the amendment was needed, adding that the amendment can be modified in the future and is designed to sit within the county’s legal limits.

The commission emphasized the action is proactive: a commissioner said, “there are no active data center projects in the horizon,” and described the addendum as a planning tool that directs any future development applications to the county planning commission for review and public comment.

The addendum was introduced following a public hearing the board described as having produced “robust discussion” about potential local impacts. Commissioners thanked the county solicitor, the conservation district, zoning and planning boards, and the IDA for their roles in drafting the language and vetting options.

Under the change, future data center proposals will be subject to established planning-commission review and public-notice procedures. Commissioners noted the addendum does not retroactively alter projects already applied for before the amendment’s enactment; such proposals would be grandfathered under prior rules.
