Mullins council forms committee on pending lawsuits after mayor recuses; attorney-hire motion gets no second

Mayor Miko Pickett recused herself from discussion of pending litigation involving her after Interim City Attorney James E Bain advised the council that the matter concerned the mayor, council members said at a special meeting Tuesday.
After returning from an executive session called to address "Mayor Miko Pickett vs. The City of Mullins," Council Member Luke Gasque moved to create a committee to handle pending legal lawsuits and litigations; Council Member Kindra Brewton-Pompey seconded the motion and the council proceeded to take nominations for the committee.
Council Member Kindra Brewton-Pompey nominated Council Member Albert Woodberry to serve on the committee; the nomination was seconded by Council Member Eddie Kitchen. Council Member Eddie Kitchen nominated Kindra Brewton-Pompey (seconded by Council Member Luke Gasque) and also nominated Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn Wilson (seconded by Gasque). The council set the committee to meet Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Earlier in the meeting Mayor Miko Pickett moved to hire an attorney at a rate of $185 per hour; the motion received no second and did not advance. The council record does not show any vote tally for that motion.
The meeting opened at 5:30 p.m. in the Raymond Pridgen Auditorium at Mullins City Hall with Mayor Pro Tem Carolyn Wilson presiding, the Pledge of Allegiance led by Council Member Luke Gasque and an invocation by Pastor Ayala of the Mullins Ministerial Alliance. The council made a Freedom of Information Act disclosure at the start of the meeting.
The special session concluded after the committee nominations and a motion to adjourn by Council Member Eddie Kitchen, seconded by Council Member Kindra Brewton-Pompey. The committee will meet May 21 to take up the pending litigation matters.
